There has been a significant income change in my household, so I am considering the idea of adding advertisments, Amazon Affiliates, and seeking sponsorships/direct pay ads (as opposed to pay per click like AdSense).
I'd love to hear your thoughts on how this would affect the blog, what your levels of tolerance are, and if you have any ideas about other ways to help the blog pay. I'd especially love to know if you have a "monetized" blog.
I am not committed to this idea, just exploring it for now!
So...
Should I "monetize" the blog?
You won't make very much.
ReplyDeleteThis is why the reaction of the community is important.
DeleteI wouldn't mind it- I think it's better that you keep sharing your awesome insights even if it does mean having a few ads than having to stop because of money issues. But that's just my 2 cents... =)
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind it. I really think that committed readers understand that running a blog is hard work and that if ads can pay for a cup of coffee to go have 1 hour in a cafe to write a blog post, then all the better.
ReplyDeleteGood luck setting it up if you decide to go for it!

XOXO
I wouldn't mind it at all.
ReplyDeleteCheck out thegirlwho.net - a mom-blogger who uses advertising in some creative ways. She'll review products and even accept samples to pass onto her readers. I'm sure if you google searched her blog with 'advertising' or something similar, you'd come up with the posts explaining what she's doing and why.
Good luck! I hope you can use this blog to help make a little extra money!
I'd say go for it - as long as you don't overdo I don't think anyone would mind. And you absolutely deserve to make some money for all your hard work. But unfortunately, as others have said, you probably won't make very much.
ReplyDeleteOne blog I follow that does it very well is http://www.senior-gardening.com/. Not a skating blog, of course, but very well done, and I believe he does make some decent money.
I say go for it! Ads and sponsored posts don't bother me a bit.
ReplyDeleteWhy not? It's pretty common. ~Meg
ReplyDeleteGo for it!
ReplyDeleteCheck out BlogHer and their ad network. Also, Federated Media. You have a good niche and depending on your traffic, they may take you on.
You work hard; the return won't be huge but every bit helps.
ReplyDeleteI'd encourage you do do it on sheer principle.
ReplyDeleteYou provide lots of infotainment and in return I expect to either have to pay you or watch ads that pay you. The latter is a far more delightful option in my view. :-D
Sorry for your troubles. I'm completely indifferent, unless of course the ads are intrusive in some way (they aren't on most blogs). Like others have said, it's not generally very lucrative but every little bit helps.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone else - no problem at all to have ads.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the sentiments above: if it makes financial sense - go for it! You have unique content that people will go to even if there's an annoying ad for grapefruit-flavored earwax that removes belly fat just off to the side.
